This still a work in progress...
Max Fried, ATL, LHP
Derek Fisher, HOU, OF
Trey Supak, PIT, RHP
Brady Aiken, CLE, LHP
Triston McKenzie, CLE, RHP
Jahmai Jones, LAA, OF
Joe McCarthy, TB, OF
Bryan Hudson, CHC, LHP
Ricardo Sanchez, ATL, LHP
Dylan Davis - SF
Ronny Rafael - HOU
Miguel Angel Sierra - HOU
Tyler Glasnow, PIT, RHP, Grade A/Borderline A-: Age 21,1.74 ERA with 157/57 K/BB in 124 innings in High-A, just 74 hits. Ridiculously good K/IP and H/IP marks stand out and reflect quality of upper-90s fastball and curve. Change-up improving, overall command still needs tightening but the stuff is outstanding. Number one starter upside if the command is there.
Jorge Soler, CHC, OF, Grade A: Signed $5M (2015) Age 22, hit .340/.432/.700 in 62 minor league games and .292/.330/.573 in 24 major league games. That’s not a fluke, the bat is legitimately that good. Like Russell, the main concern is propensity to injury. You can make a case to rank Soler ahead of Russell since he’s more proven at higher levels, but Russell’s youth and positional premium move him slightly ahead for me.
Blake Swihart, BOS, C, Grade A-: Borderline B+: Age 22, hit .293/.341/.469 with 13 homers between Double-A and Triple-A. Bat is steadily improving. Glove is amazing: threw out 47 percent of runners while giving up zero passed balls in 96 games behind the plate. Mobile, athletic, extremely reliable.
Tyler Beede, SF, RHP, Grade B: Borderline B+: Age 21, first round pick out of Vanderbilt, has the stuff to be a number two starter but inconsistent command and a spotty breaking ball need to be addressed. Healthy Matt Cain is the upside.
Grant Holmes, LAD, RHP, Grade B/Borderline B+: Age 18, posted 3.72 ERA with 58/13 K/BB in 48 innings in rookie ball, 39 hits, 2.32 GO/AO. 2014 first round pick with heavy fastball, power curve, and solid command for his age, number two starter projection assuming the change-up progresses and he stays healthy.
Alex Verdugo, LAD, OF, Grade B/Borderline B+: Age 18, hit .353/.421/.511 with 20 walks, 18 strikeouts, 11 steals in 11 attempts over 190 at-bats in rookie ball. 2014 second rounder with spectacular debut, many preferred him as a pitcher but Dodgers loved the bat and early results are outstanding, excellent across the board skills and tools in the early going.
Marcus Semien, OAK, INF, Grade B: Borderline B-. I had him rated as a sleeper pick last year but I don’t think anyone expected 19 homers, 24 steals, and 98 walks. Might not hit for a high average but has a broad array of offensive skills and decent defense. He didn’t bring his plate discipline to the majors but overall I think he is for real and should have a very good career.
Roberto Baldoquin, INF, Grade B-: Age 20, signed out of Cuba this month, scouting reports indicate a middle infielder with more power than typical for the position, however reports on pure hitting skills, strike zone judgment, defensive projection vary from source to source. I’ve watched the same videos as everyone else and read the same reports and he is tough to rank until we see him in spring training. Could be anything, star to sub. Consider this a placeholder grade pending more information.Nick Kingham, PIT, RHP, Grade B-: Age 23, posted 3.04 ERA with 54/25 K/BB in 71 innings in Double-A then 3.58 ERA with 65/27 K/BB in 88 innings in Triple-A. Steady, solid, throws strikes with low-90s fastball, reasonable curve and change. Nothing spectacular but nothing bad, either. Classic fourth starter inning-eater, maybe a third if everything maxes out.
Brian Flynn, KC, LHP, Grade B-. Huge 6-8 lefty led Pacific Coast League in ERA due to improved slider and changeup to go with 88-95 MPH fastball. He got hit hard in 18 big league innings due to command troubles which hadn’t bothered him during the minor league season, but he will get more chances. Relief work is fallback option but he could become a solid fourth starter.
Andrew Thurman, ATL, RHP, Grade B-: Reminds me of Tropeano with strong command of three decent pitches and profiles similarly as an inning-eater type.
R.J. Alvarez, OAK, RHP, Grade B-/Borderline C+: Age 23, posted 1.25 ERA with 61/13 K/BB in 43 innings, just 29 hits in Double-A in Angels and Padres systems (he was in Huston Street trade). Now with Athletics after Derek Norris deal. Ranking relief prospects is problematic but he is one of the better ones around, mid-90s, good slider, no question about the stuff. 1.13 ERA in 10 game, eight inning big league debut. I think he can close if command holds.
Eric Jagielo, NYY, 3B, Grade B-/Borderline C+: Age 22, hit .259/.354/.460 in Florida State League, which is strong production for context (wRC+132). Power is real, but platoon issues and defense could make him more of a role player than long-term regular.
Cam Bedrosian, RHP, Grade C+/Borderline B-: Age 23, fizzled as a starter but took well to relief as you might anticipate given his bloodline background, mid-90s fastball, slider has come along. Will he close eventually or just settle in as a middle man?
Chris Ellis, RHP, Grade C+/Borderline B-: Age 22, third round pick from University of Mississippi, 6.89 ERA with 16/8 K/BB in 16 innings in Pioneer League. Scouting reports better than the early stats, hard sinker and slider, change-up okay, strikeout rate was low in college but higher as a pro. Many see mid-rotation arm but my guess is that he winds up as a reliever.
Scott Blewett, KC, RHP, Grade C+: Age 18, drafted in the second round last June from high school in New York state, 6-6 cold-weather arm who already touches 94 and should get faster, secondary stuff understandably needs refinement.
Dylan Cease, CHC, RHP, Grade C+: No write up for him.
Alec Grosser, ATL, RHP, Grade C+ : SLEEPER ALERT, age 19, 3.68 ERA with 63/22 K/BB in 64 innings in Appy League. Braves fans are well aware of him and he’s starting to get more press nationally, so not a sleeper for much longer. Needs to make full-season transition but low-90s fastball, slider, and changeup project well. Another possible mid-rotation guy.
Chris Bostick, WAS, 2B, Grade C+: Age 21, acquired in trade with Rangers, hit .251/.322/.412 with 11 homers, 24 steals, 47 walks, 116 strikeouts in 495 at-bats in High-A. Needs to tighten up defense as well as strike zone, but could become a multi-category contributor if he can handle Double-A.
Victor Alcantara, RHP, Grade C+: Age 21, high-ceiling arm signed out of Dominican in 2012, 3.81 ERA with 117/60 K/BB in 125 innings in Low-A, mid-upper-90s fastball, slider and change-up erratic but improved compared to ’13, another guy who may wind up in bullpen due to command and mechanical issues.
Daniel Carbonell, SF, OF, Grade C+: 23 years old, Cuban defector hit .336/.384/.523 in 31 game pro debut between AZL and Cal League, stole 11 bases in 13 attempts. Speed and defense look very good, early hitting stats are sharp, too, although scouting reports from Arizona Fall League aren’t as optimistic about his chance to do this at higher levels and the sample is too small to be comfortable sabermetrically. Thus, a cautious grade until we see more. Could be a regular outfielder if all goes well, or a bench guy if it doesn’t.
Hunter Green, LHP, Grade C+: Age 19, second round pick from high school in Kentucky in 2013, missed all of 2014 with back trouble. Low-90s fastball, promising curveball, needs innings to iron out secondaries and command, missed season was not good but at least it wasn’t his shoulder or elbow.
Kyle McGowin, RHP, Grade C+: Age 23, posted 2.93 ERA with 48/16 K/BB in 58 innings in High-A, limited by elbow injury although surgery avoided. Low-90s heat, very good slider, decent change-up, usually throws strikes, number four projection or a middle reliever if durability remains an issue.
Jeremy Rhoades, RHP, Grade C+: Age 22, fourth round pick out of Illinois State in 2014, posted 4.42 ERA with 40/15 K/BB in 39 innings in Pioneer League. Sense a theme here? Low-90s fastball, good slider, some success as both starter and reliever in college but most likely a bullpen guy in pro ball, could advance quickly if command holds.
Nick Maronde, CLE, LHP, Grade C+: Pitched much better in the second half with better control for Arkansas. Should be a solid relief pitcher who doesn’t have to be confined to LOOGY work.
Mark Sappington, TB, RHP, Grade C+: Most Angels pitching prospects look like future relievers but Sappington has a chance to start. He’s got plenty of stuff with a lively fastball, slider, and changeup, but command issues need to be addressed before he’s ready for a big league trial. You can make a case to rank him ahead of Cron and Cowart.
Elliot Morris, SD, RHP, Grade C+: Age 22, another component of trade with Angels, split season between three teams so he is easy to miss, posted composite 3.38 ERA with 117/52 K/BB in 133 innings. Low/mid-90s fastball, solid slider and change-up, another potential fourth starter or reliever.
Nick Wittgren, MIA, RHP, Grade C+: Exceptional performance record for this relief prospect, 0.77 ERA with 63/10 K/BB in 58 innings, just 42 hits, 26 saves between High-A and Double-A. Punctuated this with 0.66 ERA and 19/2 K/BB in 14 innings in Arizona Fall League. Throws reasonably hard and very deceptive. Ninth-round pick out of Purdue in 2012 continues to exceed expectations. I think he could close eventually.
Alex Yarbrough, 2B, Grade C+: University of Mississippi product hits for average and provides steady defense at second base. Knocked 32 doubles, 10 triples, and 11 homers in the California League, although power increase came as a result of a more aggressive approach than he showed in college. We need to see if the power holds outside the Cal League.
Eric Stamets, CLE, SS, Grade C+: Very impressive defensive shortstop with speed, contact hitting ability, projects as a utility guy due to lack of power. Could be similar to Andrew Romine but there’s still a chance he could be better, maybe.
Jairo Diaz, COL, RHP, Grade C: Age 23, acquired from Angels over the winter, posted 3.48 ERA with 85/20 K/BB in 65 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, fanned eight in 5.2 major league innings. Throws very hard, mid-upper-90s and has a good slider, very erratic track record due to command issues but has made progress over the last year.
Nate Smith, LHP, Grade C/Borderline C+: Age 23, eighth round pick in 2013 out of Furman, 2.97 ERA with 118/44 K/BB in 118 innings between High-A and Double-A. Solid performer thus far though in-person reports emphasize lack of stuff. Best pitch is change-up, small margin for error but could be a surprise four/five starter.
Natanael Delgado, OF, Grade C: Age 19, hit .301/.333/.464 with five walks, 34 strikeouts in 153 at-bats in Pioneer League. Part of renewed Angels efforts in Latin America, Dominican outfielder has line drive bat, reports on other tools are mixed, could be a tweener but one of the higher ceilings in the system.
Kaleb Cowart, 3B, Grade C: Age 22, former first round pick with second-straight disappointing season in Double-A, hit just .223/.295/.324. He did steal 26 bases and can field his position but his swing is a mess and power just hasn’t developed. Seems increasingly likely that he will wind up as a pitcher. He was a good mound prospect in high school so it would make sense.
Andrew Daniel, 2B, Grade C: Age 22, sleeper prospect, hit .340/.408/.510 with 20 doubles, six homers, 13 steals in Pioneer League. 11th round pick from University of San Diego, we need to see him at higher levels but there are some interesting markers here. His bat gets good reviews but he fell in the draft due to poor defense. However, his glove was much better in pro ball than it was in college. Could rise quickly if he keeps hitting.
Tyler DeLoach, LHP, Grade C: Age 23, posted 2.99 ERA with 161/66 K/BB in 147 innings between High-A and Double-A. Despite impressive K/IP ratio he doesn’t burn radar guns, relying on deception, funky arm angles and changes of speed. Like Nate Smith his margin for error is thin but he has a chance.
Drew Rucinski, RHP, Grade C: Age 26, posted 3.15 ERA with 140/41 K/BB in 149 innings in Double-A, got seven-inning big league trial. You could slot most of the "others" here, but I want to point this guy out. Undrafted free agent from Ohio State plucked out of the Frontier League in 2013 and made the majors within a year. Four-pitch mix, throws strikes, if you are looking for another Matt Shoemaker "who the hell is this guy" success story, check him out.
Reid Scoggins, RHP, Grade C: Clocked as high as 101 in junior college, works in the mid-90s, struck out 76 in 65 innings in Low-A (with 3.46 ERA) but is still working on command and secondary pitches. Another potential relief arm with a good ceiling.
Ryan Chaffee, RHP, Grade C: Another guy who can be a solid reliever if the command is there, 2.92 ERA with 73/35 K/BB in 62 innings, just 41 hits in Double-A. Low-to-mid-90s fastball.
Mike Clevinger, CLE, RHP, Grade C: Tommy John recovery guy, has full arsenal including low-90s fastball, curve, and changeup giving him a starting array if his arm bounces back.
