Rangers would like to resign SS Elvis Andrus
Prior contract $454,180 (2014) minor league contract
Offer 5 years - $4,200,000 (2015NTC)(2019) NT
First offer was $4,000,000, first two moderators approved but ultimately denied
2014 Statistics of three middle infielders
Avg OPS Runs HRs RBIs SBs
Player A .293 .744 85 7 75 14
Player B .278 .700 77 7 68 16
Player C .263 .647 72 2 41 27
All comparable players and middle infielders, Player C has more SBs, but is weaker in each of the other catagories. Player A is Howie Kendrick and Player B is Erick Aybar, Player C is Elvis Andrus. Kendrick and Aybar were each extended for $4,500,000.
I am willing to get closer to the Aybar and Kendrick deals, althought I think based on stats, matching them an overpay for Andrus. Looking at Andrus' career numbers (2009-2014). His career average and OPS are .272 and .680, while Aybar's are .277 and .702 and Kendricks are .292 and .756.
Andrus' average year based on his six seasons is 84 runs, 3 (yes 3) HRs, 51 RBIs and 32 steals. Other than steals and maybe runs scored, he is lower in every other catagory than Kendrick and Aybar.
It was mentioned that Andrus has more upside and is younger, he was 25 last season, Kendrick and Aybar were 30, but I do not know when their extensions were given, at least a year or two ago, so there really isnt much of an age difference. Also last season was Andrus' worst season yet, so it is really hard to assume he is going to get better and very well could decline, last year he stole 27 bases while getting thrown out 15 times, not a very good ratio. Without his steals he is nothing. Plus, the Rangers have Profar and Odor, and reading some articles it looks like Andrus' job in Texas may not be secure for much longer, a move to another park could lessen his numbers even more.
Which is why I am proposing the $4,200,000. (2019) which I think is more than fair based on the statements above.
Thanks again.
