Previous contract: $6,675,000(2015)
3 year averages:
BA- .262 OPS- .813 runs- 84 rbi- 83 hr- 27 sb- 11
Upton's a nice solid player. Hes not the superstar I thought he was...but he's a good player.
Curtis Granderson is a similar player and he was resigned for $7.5M.
The Diamondbacks offer Justin Upton- $7,750,000(2020)

This is fair for Upton. I had higher hopes for him as well, but this seems to be where he fits based upon his production.

Veto #1.
This is a really tough one. But I think Granderson is not a good comp. He was 32 when re-signed and coming off a terrible season. Justin Upton is just hitting his prime, moving to a great lineup, and coming off an all-star 20-20 season. I think there are better comps to Upton in some of these OF re-signs: Adam Jones $10,500,000 (2015 NTC) (2017) Carlos Gomez - $10,000,000 (2014 NTC) (2018) Jacoby Ellsbury - $10,500,000 (2014 NTC)(2018)
Other $7-8m contracts besides Granderson: Shane Victorino $7,500,000 (2014 NTC)(2016) Shin-Soo Choo $8,500,000 (2016)
I think Upton is worth much more than Granderson and Victorino were after their age 32 seasons so those aren't good comps IMO. So I'm looking for a contract somewhere between these two ranges. Somewhere around $9-10m seems about right to me depending the years.

I'm going to agree with White Sox here. Granderson was coming off a horrendous season plagued with injuries when he got resigned (.229/.317/.407 AVG/OBP/SLG 7 HR 31 R 15 RBI 8 SB). It was possible that he would have become fantasy irrelevant after that year. That is not the case with Upton as he is hitting his prime and delivers results in every category

Veto #3.
Just listing last season's stats (that we use here - r, hr, rbi, sb, avg, ops) and the career numbers: I also included the player's ages and the contract amounts of the other 3. I also only wanted to compare Upton to other corner outfielders here. Just based on the numbers, Upton seems to comp well with these players. He also should see an uptick in value going from San Diego to Detroit. As was mentioned, Granderson was coming of a terrible season and was discounted. My thought is a contract in line with what Pence and Choo are getting.
