Reds would like to resign Mr. Johnny Cueto.
Similar player and contract:
Jeff Samardzija - $8,500,000 (2015 NTC) (2019)
Samarddjia got 4 years at 8.5 but Cueto has a little more "ace" potential upside. The end of the season with KC was a bit concerning for him going forward.
Reds offer the same contract: Johnny Cueto - $8,500,000 (2016 NTC) (2020)
Cincinatti management looks forward to the opportunity to have Mr. Cueto lead us back to the World Series for years to come.

I think Cueto should be paid more than Jeff S. not saying a lot more maybe $500k-$1 mil more but his #s are significantly better and he is back in the NL after the failed trip to AL with KC.

I am ok with the valuation. I get the thought on AL/NL, but he was not very good to end the year last year. I do think there is some risk in this resigning due to that.

Veto #2.
He has more than ace potential. Cueto is an ace already. End of last year is some concern, but the previous 4.5 years he had an ERA under 3. Strikeout rates are good, no concerns about park/league/team defense. I'd also be looking for something like $9.5m. It is a 5 year deal so there's some risk, but Cueto is legit. Shark has the strikeouts but that is about where the comparison stops IMO.

Samardzija and Cueto aren't even close in my opinion. Out of qualified starters, Samardzija had the third highest ERA in the majors. At best, Samardzija is inconsistent, whereas Cueto has proven himself in being a top pitcher in the majors. Yes, Cueto struggled in KC, but as mentioned earlier, he is going back to the NL (not to mention pitcher friendly AT & T Park). Cueto needs to receive more than Samardzija
