Previous contract - $8,000,000 (2016) New Offer - $5,000,000 (2017 NTC) (2019)
There's not too much to compare with when it comes to resigns Posey resigned last year for $12,000,000 for 3 years at age 28. McCann resigned in 2014 for $9,000,000 for 5 years at age 29.
Molina is currently 34 and who knows how long he'll stay as a C. Last season stats: .307 AVG (Tied 1st in Cs) 8 HRs (Tied 24th in Cs) 58 RBIs (Tied 9th in Cs) 534 ABs (2nd in Cs)
Posey hit .318 with 19 HRs & 95 RBIs in 557 ABs in 2015 before the resign in 2016. Both are high AVG career hitting Cs (Molina .286 & Posey .307), but Molina is 6 years older at time of resign.
McCann hit .256 with 20 HRs & 57 RBIs in 429 ABs in 2013 before resign in 2015. McCann has hit 20+ HRs every year since '08. Molina has hit 20+ HRs in 1 out of 12 seasons (2012).
Looking at FAs from last year: Martin (age 33) $9,000,000/4yrs Martin hit .240 with 23 HRs & 77 RBIs in 441 ABs in 2015 before being signed last year.
Cervelli (age 29) $6,000,000/4yrs Cervelli hit .295 with 7 HRs and 43 RBIs in 451 ABs in 2015 before being signed last year.
It's safe to say that Molina is not the offensive powerhouse like Posey/McCann/Martin, so I can't see paying anything close to those salaries. I look at age as the biggest factor with Molina. He might not even end up playing 3 more years and he's not going to put up any spectacular fantasy numbers unless he meets up with Barry Bonds at some point.

I sent Chris a PM I wanted to discuss this with him before we vote as I wanted to make sure he understands re-signs b/c I am not sure I would use one on a 34-YO Catcher whose stats have declined offensively.

Approve #1
I am approving Molina based on his age, he has always been an above average defensive catcher and last year was his career offensive year. If he make it through 2017 as the starting catcher it will surprise me as I have been hearing he will soon become the backup catcher for St. Louis. I feel the offer will be to low for 2017 but years 2018 and 2019 he will not come close to earning his pay.

For me, this is borderline too high. If Molina moves off C eligibility he is almost unplayable if his stats were to decline. That being said $5M dead weight contract is not too much. C is a pretty sparse position so I can see the reasoning in this even if I personally wouldn't do it.

Here was my response to Joey, so you guys understand why I would resign Molina.
Yeah I looked over the team. Melky comes off after 2017. Ending 2017 is Carpenter and Lynn. Would resign Carpenter as I don't really need SP.
Wainwright comes off after 2018. Ending in 2018 is Wainwright, Shelby, Rosenthal, Maness, Adams. Rosenthal might be the only potential, but that's 2 years away.
Molina would come off after 2019. I look at it as I'll have 1 resign spot coming open each year, but I don't have any stud player with a contract ending within the next two years.
My team is pretty much set for the next 2-3 years except for C and SS. Resigning Crawford solves my SS and Molina will fill in C for the time being even if it only gets me through this year. Also I have top Cardinals C prospect in Carson Kelly slated to be up this year or next.

I'm with Braves, he's on the verge of a move to back up C or retirement, so this may be dead weight soon. But your reasoning makes sense and the combo of him and Kelly should be able to fill your C spot regardless of what happens. You may have to eat a year or two of this deal, but it does fill the need for at least a year. If he sticks around as a backup C it will be nice to have Kelly's backup in case something happens as well.
Price range seems reasonable considering Cervelli's $6M in FA.
