)Matt Barnes, RHP, (Redsox) Grade B+. Has the build and stuff of a rotation anchor, and improved every year in college. Still some rough edges and he won't get to the majors as fast as Trevor Bauer or Danny Hultzen, but he could be a real steal at 19th-overall in the '11 draft.
)Tyler Goeddel, 3B, Grade B: Young, toolsy, one of many intriguing young position players (age 19) at Low-A Bowling Green who didn't put up terrific raw stats (.246/.335/.371, 30 steals) but who has the physical ability to be a regular player.
)Enny Romero, LHP, Grade B: His command wobbles (76 walks in 126 innings in High-A is too many) but he's got quality stuff with mid-90s heat and a good curve. At worst he should be a good LOOGY, and with more development he can be a mid-rotation guy. The Rays have a lot of those.
)Pat Light, RHP, (Redsox) Grade B: One of my favorite pitchers from the 2012 draft, I suspect I like him better than many people do but I think he can improve his changeup enough to start. If not, another guy who could dominate in relief.
)Brian Johnson, LHP, (Redsox) Grade B: Very polished University of Florida lefty is classic "low upside, high floor" pitcher who should move through system quickly as an inning-soaking strike-thrower.
)Jake Hager, SS, Grade B: Another Bowling Green guy, doesn't have Goeddel's tools but more polished at this point and actually several months younger, hit .281/.345/.412. Might wind up at second base but I like him.
)Derek Dietrich, SS,(Marlins) Grade B: Power is his best tool and he should be a solid defender at second base, but his plate discipline isn't great and OBP may be an issue.
)Parker Markel, RHP, Grade B: Another Bowling Green guy, live-armed right-hander with power sinker, 3.53 ERA with 96/34 K/BB in 120 innings. And yet another guy who could be a mid-rotation starter if all goes well.
)Jose Vinicio, SS, (Redsox) Grade B: Another tools guy, gets strong reviews on defense. Fast, has a chance to hit for average, but don't expect power.
)Drew Vettleson, OF, Grade B: Solid across-the-board, has some power, some speed, some patience, good defender in right field, hit pretty well in the Midwest League (.275/.340/.432) at age 20/21. I don't see him as a star but he does a lot of different things to help his teams.
)Anthony Ranaudo, RHP, (Redsox) Grade C+: Jekyll-Hyde season, both statistically and scout-wise, with large variations in quality of both stuff and command from start to start making it hard to get a proper read on him.
)Jesse Hahn, RHP, Grade C+: Borderline B-. Recovered from Tommy John surgery to dominate New York-Penn League for Hudson Valley (2.77 ERA, 55/15 K/BB, 2.88 GO/AO in 52 innings). Has always had the stuff, just needs command and health. Once we see how much stamina he has, he could shoot way up this list in 2013. You can draw a scenario where he ranks as their second-best pitching prospect behind G nine months from now.
)Jake Thompson, RHP, Grade C+: 2.93 ERA with 32/23 K/BB in 71 innings for Charlotte, 72 hits. Throws strikes, but the K/IP ratio is not impressive at all.
)Granden Goetzman, OF, Grade C+: Hitting .298/.346/.468 with four walks, seven strikeouts, seven steals in 47 at-bats for Princeton. So far, so good in the Appy League.
)Tyler Bortnick, 2B, (Diamondbacks) Grade C+: Hitting .257/.353/.389 with 40 walks, 52 strikeouts in 311 at-bats for Montgomery, 23 steals in 25 attempts. Speed/walk combination with very solid second base glove.
)Justin O'Conner, C, Grade C+: .163/.226/.296 in 98 at-bats for Princeton, 8/44 BB/K. He hit poorly in rookie ball last year too, and while he is quite young, I think concerns about the bat are now warranted.
)Nick Barnese, RHP, Grade B-: I've liked him better in the past and I still think he can be a good pitcher, but durability/injury concerns are still a big issue.
)Joe Cruz, RHP, Grade C+: Ugly 8.43 ERA with 42/20 K/BB in 47 innings, plus an incredibly bad 75 hits for Montgomery. On the DL since early June with a strained groin.
)Lenny Linsky, RHP, Grade C+: Power sinker/slider, excellent ground ball rates with strikeouts and solid command. 2011 draft product could move very quickly through system.
)Kes Carter, OF, Grade C+: Western Kentucky outfielder has solid tools, good performance record, but gets hurt a lot.
)Scott Shuman, RHP, Grade C+: 5.45 ERA, 64/42 K/BB in 36 innings for Charlotte 22 hits, 1.75 GO/AO. Outstanding strikeout rate with lots of grounders, but very serious control problems this year.
)Wilking Rodriguez, RHP, Grade C+: With all the pitching in the Rays’ system, Rodriguez kind of flies under the radar. He also got in only 45 innings on the mound in 2011 because of a shoulder injury early in the year. He has very good stuff, with a fastball that can touch the mid-90s. He’ll need to continue to work on his secondary pitches to be a starter as he moves up, but he’s one that shouldn’t be lost in the shuffle.
)Braulio Lara, LHP, Grade C+: 4.78 ERA with 84/45 K/BB in 90 innings for Bowling Green, 85 hits. I felt he was capable of better.
)Leslie Anderson, OF, Grade C+: .279/.311/.430 with 12 homers, 14 walks, 43 strikeouts for Durham. Very low walk rate limits usefulness as an extra bat.
)Robinson Chirinos, C, Grade C+: .265/.342/.378 for Durham, 3-for-18 (.167) in the majors. Now 27 years old but will hang around for awhile as a reserve/Quadruple-A type.
