PADRES Justin Upton (OF - LAA) $8,250,000 (2020) - RESIGN Joakim Soria (RP - OAK) $5,000,000 (2020) David Hernandez (RP - CIN) $1,500,000 (2019) Joey Cantillo (SP - SDP) - Prospect Jesus Gonzalez (P - SDP) - Prospect ((Jesus Andres Gonzalez)) Charlis Aquino (SS - SDP) - Prosepct Brandon Valenzuela (C - SDP) - Prospect Cristián Heredia (OF - SDP) - Prospect Starlin Cordero (P - SDP) - Prospect Jordan Guerrero (P - SDP) - Prospect ((Jordan Marcelo Guerrero)) 2019 FYPD 1st Round Pick (1.19) 2019 FYPD 2nd Round Pick (2.19) 2020 FYPD 1st Round Pick
FOR
CARDINALS Aaron Nola (SP - PHI) $300,000 (2020) Carlos Martinez (RP - STL) $300,000 (2019) Tommy Pham (OF - TBR) $300,000 (2020)
This is the Padres going all-in on the next two years. Trading away Upton seems weird for a competing team, but it does free up a RESIGN tag for Bogaerts/Springer. Soria and Hernandez were rsoter space throw-ins. Cantillo is a really nice spec and is starting to show in some Top 150/200 lists. Barley is young and athletic - but very raw and very far away. I'll be honest, I had to google the last 6 specs - but Cardinals knew them and wanted them. Hate giving away my drafts for the next two years (as that's why I like being in these leagues) - but have to pull the trigger for top talent.
All that draft capital nets me 1.5 years of a top tier starter in Nola and a really good OF in Pham, who also gives me a little more in the steals category. Martinez hopefully sticks as the Cards closer and can rack up some saves this year.
Thanks for the deal Cards - and good luck with the picks and specs!

HOLD - noticing one of the prospects in the deal was already traded earlier this year. Contacting trade partner to remedy (my fault for not noticing)

Back on - replaced prospect with others. Edited original trade post to reflect correct trade - sorry for any confusion. Cards to confirm/agree.

I just traded for a former 1st overall pick and 10 prospects to carry his luggage around. It make look like a group of no name prospects... But I have reason to be excited about each and every one of them. Jesus Andres Gonzalez (Future search purposes) is throwing almost 10 mph harder than he was when he signed 2 years ago. Charlis is a slick fielding SS and viewed by some as the top IFA by the Padres last year. Honestly don't know anything about Brandon Valenzuela... but he's an 18 year old catcher with a beautiful 20/14 BB/K ratio during his first taste of state side baseball. Cristian Heredia may be my favorite spec coming back. He's originally from Spain and is relatively new to the game of baseball. Plus batspeed, plus maturity, with an old school approach to baseball. He's a wet dream waiting to happen. Cordero and Guerrero were late add ons but neither leave me bored. Cordero gets pterodactyl body comps and throws in the upper 90s while Guerrero is 6'6" 300+ and also throws upper 90s. Both have more than solid upside as RPs. On... and I get 3 picks with all of these sexy pieces of man meat. I'm a happy man.

Padres are giving up a lot of quantity but just how much quality is likely to be determined.
Its basically Justin Upton, Joey Cantillo, 2 1st, a 2nd and a bunch of lottery tickets in return for an ace, a former SP turned CL and a solid OFer.
If Padres does not win it all in the next 2-yrs this could be a deal he ends up regretting.
