Re-signing change.
On re-signs what we're wanting to do now is take all of the human judgement out of it and use the Fantrax rankings to determine the worth of players. Every player on Fantrax is given a "score". The better the player, the higher it is. To determine a player's worth, we want to use their past 3 years to determine it, but with more emphasis on the most current year. We were also wanting to use a maximum of $14M for position players, a maximum of $13M for staring pitchers and a maximum of $9.7M for relief pitchers. We came up with those numbers by going through the past re-signs. For any player to hit those maximums, their Fantrax score would have had to been 100 for the past 3 years. Very doubtful one would do that.
Giving a couple of examples on players:
SP Dallas Keuchel:
Fantrax scores the past 3 years:
2017 - 84.86
2016 - 45.43
2015 - 96.51
Using those to determine the contract would work like this:
We double weight the most current year (2017)
84.86 x 2 = 169.72
Next, add the 2 other years to that.
169.72 + 45.43 + 96.51 = 311.66
Then we divide that by 4 to give an average which is 77.915. Using that number as a percentage, we multiply that against the $13M max starter contract.
Which gives a contract of $10,128,950. That, we'll round to the closest 100k so it'd be a contract of $10.1M.
This system does take into account past injuries during those 3 years as you can see Keuchel's score number was way down in 2016 and slightly down in 2017. So, injuries do give a re-sign discount.
A second example using a lesser player:
SS Freddy Galvis
Fantrax scores:
2017 - 45.62
2016 - 45.53
2015 - 41.29
The formula would be (45.62 x 2 = 91.24) + 45.53 + 41.29 = 178.06 which divided by 4 = 44.515
The $14M max position contract x 44.515% = $6,232,100 which becomes $6.2M.
It would then be up to me to decide if I want to re-sign Keuchel or Galvis at those numbers. One thing thee system does do is give similiar contracts to any player with the same scores.
Also on this, any player who is or turns 35 on or before opening day will be given a 25% discount. This way the system will take the age issue into consideration.
Hopefully everyone likes this as it'll make all re-signs just smooth and easy. No comps to fool with in presenting them or voting on them. Also it assures if another team has a player with the same scores as yours, the contract will be the same.
* On pitchers like Darvish and Lynn who both sat out a full season during the last 3 years thus lowering their value on this, we ok with them getting through at a lesser salary
* On a player like Nelson Cruz who was re-signed here at $8,000,000 (2016 NTC)(2018), the formula during the time of his resign would have put him at $11,100,000.
The formula does not take into account a player's age which is something we always do with older players. Should we maybe apply a 25% discount to players 35 and over? That would've put Cruz at $8.325M. -- Yes we should.
* Owners will still decide # of years 3, 4 or 5 yrs.
* Teams who sign overpriced 1-yr deals will not be allowed to be re-signed.
* Currently, the rules only allow for 2 re-signs per team each year. Do we need that limit? -- Yes the 2 per team each year will remain.
